hey! its brook here :D
Welcome to Wednesday Wrap Up #7.
Lets get into it ↓
what am I reading: The Art of Learning by Josh Waitzkin
As of recently, I have been obsessed with figuring out the most optimal way to reach understandings. From researching mythologies such as socratic questioning, first principles thinking, and more.
The author, Josh Waitzkin, is hailed as a prodigy in the Chess community, and is world champ in Push Hands.
What is the main thing that he credits to this status and capability?
The ability to learn.
This book is exactly about that. Learning how to learn.
I will be sharing my findings as I read more.
Stay tuned.
the “what the hell” effect in training: bouldering edition
Last weekend, I went to the local bouldering gym after not doing any sort of rock climbing in over 6 months.
And I found myself not to be weaker, but rather just as strong, and maybe even stronger.
I was able to climb the same difficulty of routes that I had been able to do 6 months ago, but because of my flexibility and mobility training, I felt even better. My technique was smoother, as was my transitions.
This is called the “what the hell” effect. It happens when you do indirect training and make gains in another seemingly unrelated category.
It is common around kettlebell training, and is an especially common side effect of the kettlebell swing. I am not going to credit kettlebell swings to my “gainz” but it definitely doesn’t hurt.
I posted a video to my X/Twitter of a climb from last weekend. It was a v4/v5. Check out the video here.
something I saved to my readwise this week: Tim Ferriss on getting shit done
Recently, I have been a snail. Nothing was getting done and I have been absolutely lazy. (i made a post about it, check it here)
Nothing would break me out of this funk. I came across this semi-long form post from Tim Ferriss. And it has helped me immensely on getting out of this funk the last few days.
Here is the short of the long:
Have two top priorities for a day. Never have more.
Ask yourself: “If I only completed this one (or two) thing(s), would I be satisfied with my day?”
That practice has gotten me out of my funk and has finally gotten the ball rolling.
Momentum is building…
I highly suggest you give it a read here
what album do i have on repeat: mansionz 2 by mansionz
If you don’t know who mansionz is, it is the duo of Mike Posner (i took a pill in ibeza guy) and blackbear (hot girl bummer anthem dude).
Their personal acts have given them both a superficial appearance, but this project is anything but.
mansionz 2 is the sophomore album for the duo, and heavily attacks the idea of duality. The album has a definitive vibe-line (like a storyline but with the vibe). A clear transformation from start to finish. A hero’s journey, per se.
Listen to it and let me know what you think.
I hope you enjoyed this Wednesday Wrap Up and found some cool stuff.
Have you experienced the “what the hell” effect in your training? Would love to hear your experience with it.
As always…
KEEP GOING
