If you want to get effortless results in life, there is nothing more important than your environment.
Those who have a dialed environment rarely get burnt out. They are also the highest performers in the world. All because they know how to get their environment to work for them, and not against them.
The only issue is that it's a monumental challenge to identify and assess every aspect of our environment.
We have our:
Home environment
Work environment
Social environment
Digital environment
Outdoor environment
Internal environment
Political environment
Financial environment
Temporal environment
Energetic environment
Information environment...
etc — I could go on.
Fortunately, we can clump all environmental factors this into these two buckets:
Internal — Within your control
External — Outside your immediate control
Now that we can look through the lens of everything within our environment as either internal and external—or rather within our control and outside our control.
The only thing left is to get focused on one narrow part of our environment.
I start this by having a goal or a desired result.
Welcome to the environment crafting protocol. Let's get into it:
Get a sheet of paper and write down the desired result you wish.
It's likely opposite of most of your problems. So if you are stuck, start by listing out your most pressing issues, and then inverting them. (e.g.: no money in the bank account → 10k /mo business)
You should have a list of desired results you want from life (and from your environment).
Pick one to focus on, I suggest the one that would make the biggest difference in your life.
Next, we list out the key steps to achieve that result, starting with your current situation.
For example: your desired result is a 10k/mo fitness coaching business. But you only are at 2k/mo and are struggling to pay rent. Then your key steps might be:
2k/mo → 10k/mo
fill up calendar with clients (paying and free, goal is to get referrals and testimonials)
onboard new PAYING clients only, offer free clients the ability to keep their slot but only if they pay
raise prices for new clients until you run out of demand
get more testimonials
create content online. share value in the forms of education, entertainment, and authority (social proof)
get leads into a funnel (landing page > newsletter > offer)
(estimate — 5k/mo at this point)
request referrals from the highest paying clients
offboard the lowest paying clients with higher paying clients from referrals
team up with other trainers and synergistic businesses to grow your client base and deliver more value to your clients
refine branding and marketing to target the most enjoyable and highest paying clients in our client base.
run ads/maxx organic lead gen until calendar is full of enough people to net you 10k/mo.
hit 10k/mo
Now that we have the blueprint, we move on to the next step.
We write down all the environmental factors that affect the key task/requirement we are on. And then cross-reference with our current environment
At this step, we begin finding out what in our environment is preventing us from actualizing our desired result.
Let's say we are stuck at step 1, we can't fill up our calendar with clients (paying and free).
Here are some environmental factors that could be at play in that situation:
Internal — Within your control
Lack of knowledge on how to market themselves
Lack of confidence to do outreach
Branding and business assets
No funnel/poor funnel
No social presence
Limiting beliefs
No sales ability
etc...
External — Outside your immediate control
Not physically located near a gym
Lacking facilities/equipment
Scheduling issues for leads
Network limitation
Economic factors
No testimonials
etc..
(note — most of these factors that are out of our control can actually become a point of strength for us. e.g. Not physically located near gym bring the gym to your client in the form of dumbbells and calisthenics)
For this hypothetical situation, we want to put our focus into the things we can control (our locus of control): the internal environment.
Now, it's time for our thought experiment. How does our current environment compare to the environment necessary to achieve our desired result?
Here is what an environment might look like where we have already acquired step 1:
Internal
We have a sales script and objection handling framework
We practiced marketing ourselves to our friends and family, now we have the confidence to approach clients
Built a simple funnel using Kit and started posting on Instagram
Created a simple set of brand colors to keep brand consistent
You can clearly see where the current environment and the necessary environment are misaligned (and that they are pretty much just the opposite).
If you are stuck and are not sure what environmental variables are at play... I highly suggest you ask ChatGPT, and it should be able to guide you in the right direction.
It's simple from here on out. It's time to craft our environment.
Make changes to your current environment to match the environment that nets the desired result.
This might look like:
Situating ourselves into social environments with other fitness coaches to learn what they do (learn via osmosis)
Go to networking events and gyms to practice selling yourself
Read books and watch YouTube videos on how to do sales and marketing
Follow a tutorial on how to make a Kit account and basic funnel (or as me to help you)
This can be as drastic or as minimal as you desire. I recommend starting with small, easy-to-complete 5-mins or fewer adjustments that net a good enough result. Doing many of these small things can compound into bigger results. But nothing can replace drastic change.
Repeat this process for every piece of your list until you reach your true end desired result.
So, to overview:
Get a sheet of paper and write down the desired result you wish.
List out the key steps that are required to achieve that result, starting with your current situation.
Write down the environmental factors that affect the key task/requirement we are on. And then cross-reference with our current environment
Make changes to your current environment to match the environment that nets the desired result.
Eventually, it gets pretty simple.
Example:
Desired result: Focus
Environment required: No distractions.
Actions to make environment match: clean desk, use do not disturb.
Don't overthink this one too much.
Here is a list of examples of high performers and their perfectly crafted environment for them to achieve a desired result:
Casey Neistat + Winter with no heat + dumbbells
Jerry Seinfeld (creator of one of the most successful TV shows in history)
Desired result: write jokes
Environment: he locked himself in a room with nothing but a blank yellow memo pad and a pen. he locked himself in there for up to 4 hours, and he allowed himself to do two things: 1. nothing. 2. write jokes. guess what he ended up doing? (he wrote jokes and had a number 1 hit comedy tv show for years)
Alex Hormozi
Desired result: do work/write/maker-time (deep work)
Environment: his desk is in a back corner without windows, and he has a super wide monitor that takes up almost all of his viewing space so that he has zero chance of distraction.
An extra verbose example:
Desired result: Fit, strong, and healthy
Current situation: Fat, weak, and unhealthy
Current environment: Junk food in the house, insanely comfy couch with a TV, living in the suburbs with zero walkability, getting groceries to be delivered to their front door
Crafted environment: No junk food in the house, only whole foods. Floor seats and low tables; no TV available to sit in front of for hours on end. Lives in the city where they can walk everywhere from work to grocery store and back, cancels DoorDash or food delivery services and makes all the food from home or goes out to health food restaurants.
This is about making systems that get you the result without trying nearly as hard.
Make it easier on yourself, not harder.
Use systems, not willpower.
